Newark Clean-Up (Wildcard)

Dear Karen,
Just thinking about you, and figured I would update you a little bit about what I was involved with this past weekend. On Saturday morning I volunteered to do the Newark Clean-up. I met my friends at the Municipal Building where we signed in, picked up our gloves, and trash bags and headed to our assigned location. We picked up litter for approximately two hours; collecting it off of the grass, sidewalks, and in the parking lots of Library Avenue. Many people stopped us to ask what organization we were affiliated with.  When our time was up we put all of our bags together and were amazed at the amount of trash that we had picked up. We all decided to share the most strange or bizarre thing that we found and after that we headed back to the Municipal Building. The Lion’s Den had hot dogs, drinks, and snacks prepared for us as a thank you for volunteering our time. We all felt amazing that we put our time, energy, and effort into something as simple as picking up garbage. Later that day, I drove down the road and you could honestly see the difference. People carelessly throw smaller things such as their receipts, candy wrappers, and cigarette butts on the floor, thinking that there will be no affect, but in reality these items add up and make places look dirty. Being able to see the success from volunteering is honestly so rewarding. I believe in karma- what goes around comes around, and I hope that when people have the time and opportunity to volunteer they will and as a result, gain the feeling of achievement just like I did. See you this weekend!

Love,
Jamie

  1. Jamie, this sounds like a worthwhile project. What organization are you affiliated with? I'm a part of Gamma Sigma Sigma and we do projects like this all the time...I was inactive last semester and am busy with senior stuff this semester so I don't have time to do much for it...so you may even be in Gamma Sig and I wouldn't know! Anyway, I'm sure the community really appreciates your efforts.

  2. What a great thing to do! I am in Gamma Sig also, and we do a similar project called Adopt a Highway. It is amazing how taking a couple of hours out of a day can better a community like that. It really is crazy how people can care so little about the place where they live to just little. Especially around a college campus, I wish college students would try to not litter so much.

  3. That awesome that you are both a part of Gamma Sig. I am in Alpha Xi Delta. Many members of Greek Life attended, it was awesome to see some dedication. I have to agree with you Jennah, I don't understand why people would want to look at litter every day. It's something so simple to avoid!

  4. Its really easy for people to litter when the street is already covered with garbage. A clean street will make a lot more people stop and think though. So nice job, hopefully you didn't just clean the street once, maybe you made it a little harder for people to litter.

  5. very commendable. I liked your letter. It's interesting to get a little hint into the lives of our classmates. Cleaning up around Newark is noble task - it's definitely disgusting in places, so good for you! Nice letter.

  6. I thought It was great how you were able to incorporate a real personal experience into your letter. Like the letters we have been reading for class, you were able to talk about an event like the Newark clean-up and how it impacted the city you live in.

  7. Jamie, that is great that you were able to help out the local community and make a difference! I am sure you weren't happy about getting up early, but after seeing the results it was all worthwhile. Walking to class and on Main Street, I always think about how much trash is just laying around, and it bothers me! The city of Newark, should really enforce littering. UD is such a beautiful campus and we do not want to trash it with garbage. Good job! :)

  8. Jamie, thats such an awesome thing for you to do. Im a huge advocate for cleaning up our earth and helping in whatever way possible. I really enjoyed reading your letter because not only did you update us on a current event in our local area, but you were also able to incorporate your personal experience with the event, making it a more indiviualized letter.
